Citing “personal reasons” Greenville Town Council member Carl Livingston has announced his resignation from the council, effective immediately. His announcement came during the regular meeting of the Greenville Town Council on Monday, Aug. 14.
Livingston had served on the Greenville Town Council since November of 2021, after defeating then-incumbent Brandi Tillman in a closely contested race for Seat Five. Livingston had qualified to run for reelection for Seat Five on the council. At the present, he was facing opposition from Robin Housh for that seat.
Other candidates seeking to serve on the Greenville Town Council include incumbent Kathleen Hamilton in Seat One, who is facing a challenger, Chiquita Pleas. In the Seat Two race, incumbent Calvin Malone is facing challenger Ryan Kornegay. According to Livingston, in the race to fill vacant Seat Three, two former council members, Tillman and Barbara Dansy will be on the November ballot. Livingston stated he does plan to go through with running for the seat in the upcoming November election.
With Livingston’s departure, there are now two vacant seats on the Greenville Town Council. This leaves just three members on the council that has five seats. According to the Greenville Town Charter, a vacant seat may be filled by appointment, with a majority vote of the current town council members.
When former member Dansy’s seat was vacated, due to term limits, an attempt was made to appoint Tillman, the sister of current Greenville Mayor Brittni Brown, to fill the seat. That attempt failed to receive a majority vote from the current council members. Both Tillman and Dansy had submitted paperwork to be placed on the ballot in 2023. However, for unknown reasons, the paperwork was never turned into the Madison County Supervisor of Elections office. Therefore, neither name was placed on the ballot.
It is unclear if the current Greenville Town Council will attempt to appoint someone to Livingston’s seat.
