Janet Matheny Peterson, age 74, peacefully passed away and entered eternal rest the morning of Sunday, Sept. 6, 2020, at her home in Monroe, Ga. with her husband Robert and family by her side. Janet was born in Madison, Fla. on Sept. 12, 1945, to the late Candler and Shelly Matheny. Janet was a graduate of Madison County High School and was the Captain of her cheerleading team.
Janet married Robert Peterson, of Jasper, Fla. in 1967 and they began their new life together in Jacksonville, Fla., Janet was a very bright and talented lady who spent her career working as an executive assistant. She loved to travel with Robert and would often visit the Florida beaches or get away to the Smokey Mountains. She was known for her "green thumb," grew the prettiest flowers and could create masterpiece floral arrangements. Janet was a devout Christian and was very public about her faith.
She is survived by Robert Peterson, husband of 53 years; son, Matthew Peterson; son, Adam Peterson and his wife, Nicole; six grandchildren: Emily, Natalie, Madelyn, Noelle, Austin and Amelia. Also surviving is brother, Victor Matheny; brother, Tommy Matheny and his wife, Oneida; sister-in-law Mary Fitzpatrick and sister-in-law, Thelma Lucas; along with many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother, Mahlon; and sister, Nancy.
The family will be hosting a memorial service in Madison, Fla. honoring her life with family and friends and will make the arrangements known at a later date. We would also like to express our sincerest gratitude for the wonderful help and care given by Abbey Hospice of Social Circle, Ga.
