John H. (Buddy) Mathis, Jr., age 74, passed away peacefully at his home in Lee, on Jan. 14.
He was born in Madison County on August 19, 1941 to John Henry and Bessie Mae Tuten Mathis. He was one of 10 children. He graduated High School in Madison and served in the U. S. Army. He was a Vietnam Veteran. When he returned to Madison, he worked for T. J. Beggs, and Company. He later worked as an auto mechanic, as well as in construction and as a truck driver. He loved to “tinker” with lawn mowers and small engine repairs at home. He enjoyed fishing. He joined the Midway Church of God at an early age.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry and Bessie Mae Mathis; his brothers, J.C. Mathis, Ronnie Mathis; one sister, Annie Wilkins and by an infant sister.
He is survived by siblings Irene Mathis Foxx, Land of Lakes, Fl.; Marie Mathis O’Barr, Tarpon Springs Fl.; Lois Mathis Webb, Lee; Bonnie Mathis Webb (Joe) Lee; one brother: Richard Mathis Of Lee. He leaves a host of nieces and nephews, family and many friends, especially his “Breakfast Club” buddies at Denny’s. He had a wonderful team of doctors, nurses, the VA Medical Center and also at Big Bend Hospice.
Funeral services were held at Midway Baptist Church in Lee on Tuesday, Jan. 19 with burial at Midway Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Midway Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Midway Baptist Church, 338 SE Midway Church Rd. located in Lee or Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd in Tallahassee.
