While you may not have them off from work or printed on your refrigerator calendar, hundreds of national holidays exist; several take place each day! Many of these holidays were created in jest, and others honor lesser known historical figures and public servants. Whether World UFO Day (July 2), Middle Children's Day (August 12) or National Cream Filled Donut Day (September 14), you can find a unique way to celebrate each day.
July 13 is National French Fry Day! These tasty snacks can be found all over the world. French fries are known as “pommes frites” in France, “patatas fritas” in Spain and “chips” in the UK. In America, french fries are most often served as a side with fast food, while other nations pair them with fried fish, mussels, minced meat, steak and more. French fry condiments vary widely internationally as well, from ketchup, to sweet butter, to cheese curds and gravy. The name “french fries” can be misleading, as the exact origin of the french fry is unknown. Some believe that they were invented by hungry French-speaking Belgian soldiers during World War 1. Others contend that the dish was created by a popular street vendor in Paris. Many still maintain that the first french fries were cooked by Saint Teresa of Ávila is Spain. Whatever their origin, french fries continue to be an international favorite. Take this July 13th to celebrate National French Fry Day with traditional french fries, curly fries, waffle fries or sweet potato fries for a healthier option!
