The Madison County Central School Lady Broncos return 10 players from a team that was 11-1 last year. The team consists of eight 8th graders, Abi Annett, Jashanti Davis, Jocelyn Davis, Cali Dyal, Grace Galbraith, Summer Roberts, Sadie Underwood and Hope Underhill; two 7th graders, Jessie Roberts and Rheanna Shreiber and three 6th graders, Shelby Burt, Brianna Thompson and Halie Wetherington. The team has been practicing hard for the past four weeks and it showed in their first game against Taylor County on Friday, Feb. 5.
The Lady Broncos jumped out to an early lead on Taylor and captured a 14-4 victory on Friday at MCHS.
13 runs in the first three innings allowed the Lady Broncos to put the game away early.
A two-run error, an RBI double by Cali Dyal, a groundout by Rheanna Schreiber and a groundout by Brianna Thompson during the first inning and an RBI single by Halie Wetherington and a wild pitch in the second inning supplied an early offense for the Lady Broncos. Wetherington racked up three RBIs on three hits.
Taylor's lineup had no answer for Abi Annett. Taylor County managed just two hits off of Annett, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out three during her two 2/3 innings of work.
Hope Underhill got it done in the circle on the way to a win. She allowed four runs over two 1/3 innings. She struck out six, walked three and surrendered three hits.
T. Knowles took the loss for Taylor County. She allowed 11 runs in two 1/3 innings, walked three and struck out none.
Taylor County scored three runs in the top of the third to cut its deficit to three. A two-run double by J Pyke and a groundout by T. Gillyard sparked Taylor's rally. Finally, Annett induced an inning-ending fly out from M. Murphy.
The Lady Broncos scored six runs of its own in the third. They scored on a groundout by Underhill, a two-run double by Wetherington, an RBI single by Annett, an RBI single by Dyal and a steal of home by Jocelyn Davis.
The girls would appreciate everyone to come out and support the MCCS Softball Program.
