A concerned citizen informed Greene Publishing, Inc. that he received a call from an unknown number. The recording informed him that a complaint has been filed against him and to hear the complaint he must press 9 or call the number provided. The citizen recognized it as a scam and did not call the provided number. Scams like this have been popping up all over the place. Scammers claim that another person has sued the citizen and if they do not settle the issue now, local police will arrest them.
As it is a civil matter, the police cannot arrest you. If a complaint has been filed, citizens are first notified of it by being served by a private process server or by certified mail return receipt. If you are concerned that a complaint has been filed against you, you can contact your county’s courthouse to verify. If it is not there, it is possible that it was filed in a different court system. If you know that you do not have a complaint filed against you, you may report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission using the FTC Complaint Assistant at www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov.
