On Tuesday, May 4, the Lee Town Council met to address concerns over repairs needed for Lift Station 3. A pump at the station has repeatedly needed costly repairs. Public Works Superintendent Dennis Legendre informed council members of the ongoing costs of repairs and submitted a bid for replacing the pumps from RPI Underground, Inc., in Valdosta. After declaring the lift station repairs an emergency, the council voted unanimously to accept the $31,449 bid from RPI to repair the station.
In old business, the council resumed discussions about allowing chickens within the city limits. The board members agreed that an ordinance regarding chickens should be expanded to address other animals as well. As the discussion continued, Councilman Ronnie Bass reminded fellow council members of the need to consider their surroundings when working through the provisions of the proposed ordinance. “Remember where we are,” said Bass. “This is a farm community. We aren't in Chicago. Cats seem to be a bigger problem than anything else.” Board members will continue to address questions about the ordinance at their next meeting.
Also in old business, the Lee Town Council continued fine tuning their Clean Town Ordinance. The next step for the council is to hire a code enforcer or magistrate to prosecute violations for the town. “We need someone to enforce the codes we establish, or there's no point in having an ordinance,” stated Councilman Bass.
