Dear Editor,
Last week I went over to Tupelo's Bakery in Monticello, on Highway 90. As I passed into Jefferson County, I was surprised to see so many signs that said, "No Toll Road" in yards along the highway and in town.
I had read something about the proposed toll road in your paper a week or so ago and started thinking about my experience with toll roads.
I pay to use a toll road when I want to get to my destination as fast as possible. I don't stop at little towns along the way. The toll road that is coming to North Florida will not stop here. Really, only a fool would build a toll road from South Florida that ends in Madison County. My guess is that the plan is for that road to continue north to Atlanta, or it could hook up someplace on I 75 in Georgia. I believe that toll road will cause fewer travelers to stop in Madison. If they are willing to pay the price of a toll road, they will want to drive right on through to their final destination.
If what we want is people driving through our area to stop and spend some money, I believe the proposed toll road is not the right way to have that happen.
Sincerely,
James Glaser
