If you're looking for a place to get involved and give back to the Madison County community, look no further. The Madison Woman's Club's mission is to benefit the organizations and people of Madison in the best way they know how -- by serving them.
The Woman's Club has been part of Madison County for more than 100 years, with 40 to 50 members each year, give or take a few. The club is described as a community service organization for people who want to donate goods to other organizations in Madison and help those in need.
Debbie Bass, Co-President of the club, has been a member for more than ten years. While working at North Florida College (NFC), the President of the college encouraged students and staff to find a way to get involved in the community, so Bass did just that by joining the Woman's Club.
"We [the Woman's Club] love serving and gaining knowledge about the Madison community," said Bass.
The club donates to one charitable cause per month, beginning in September and ending in May of the following year. They have put together projects to donate canned food; school supplies for children when they start a new school year; lap blankets for the Veterans Association; hats, scarfs and mittens for children in the winter; blessing bags filled with toiletries for the homeless; and have thrown baby showers for women at the pregnancy center.
In the past, when disaster has struck, the club has also donated snacks and goods to the Madison County Sheriff's office, electric companies, police department and fire department.
"We want to support our community and that's the easiest way for us to do it -- finding a need and filling it," said Debbie Tuckey, Co-President and seven year member of the club.
Although nearly all the women in the club live in the city of Madison, that is not a requirement to join. If you would like to join the club, reach out to "Madison Woman's Club" on Facebook and send them a message. Then, you will be invited to attend a meeting and see if the club is for you.
The Woman's Club meets on the second Thursday of every month at 345 S.E. Lakeshore Dr., in Madison.
