A group of six, mostly college-aged students from Madison traveled to Detroit, Mich. recently for the Turning Point USA Chapter (TPUSA) Leadership Summit, from Wednesday, June 12, through Monday, June 17. While there, the students had the opportunity to meet and hear from speakers such as Candace Owens, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, Florida Senator Rick Scott, TPUSA President and Founder Charlie Kirk and many others. The students also attended classes and seminars aimed at promoting patriotism in their communities. While there, the local young people took the opportunity to enjoy some of the sights and tastes of the Motor City. A special highlight of the trip was an in-person appearance and address from President Donald Trump.
Under the leadership of several graduating seniors, the Madison County High School (MCHS) TPUSA chapter was started in February of this year. According to one of the student leaders, Taylor Vickers, the club is not so much a “political” club as it is a “patriotic” group, focused on promoting patriotism, informing students of their voting rights, etc. One of the highlights the new chapter had was hosting former Olympian Anthony Watson, who shared his inspirational story of rising from poverty to becoming an Olympic athlete. “We’re not a political group, not technically,” said Vickers. “People liked to call us the ‘Republican Club,’ simply because of how patriotic we are, which is exactly what everyone should be in our country.”
Along with Vickers, Gracie Carver, Shea Thompson, Jenna Littleton, Blake Hasty and Callie Knight also attended the event in Detroit. The students were accompanied by a pair of chaperones, Devin Thompson and Katie Knight.
