The Charmettes, Incorporated is a national civic organization that had its beginnings when friends Gwendolyn Baker Rodgers and Frankie Drayton Thomas recognized the need for an organization that would bring together women with similar ideas, principles and backgrounds to organize themselves to utilize their skills, talents and resources for community impact. As a sisterhood, they are dedicated and committed to improving the quality of life within our communities through advocacy, education, service and support for cancer research. In an effort to provide services in the community on an on-going basis, the Madison County Chapter of the Charmettes, Inc. began holiday celebrations by presenting "Santa comes to Town" on Saturday, Dec. 5 at Sumpter James Park on Martin Luther King Drive. Children and children at heart enjoyed talking with Santa, who was played by Rev. Charles White, eating hot dogs and cupcakes with drinks. Dr. Fun, Mr. Jim Wentmore was also present. He amazed and entertained the children with wonderful balloon figures, including dinosaurs, flowers, swords and much more. Some of the future community services that the Charmettes will be hosting include the Silver-Haired Luncheon on Dec. 21, along with the presentation of the 2015 Calendar Charms winners and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Clean-up Day at the Madison County Recreation Center will be hosted on Jan.18. The Charmettes are committed to service and will keep the community abreast of activities and services for the Madison community.
