The Madison County Sheriff's Office has shared a scam alert from the Florida Department of Health regarding electronic banking transaction (EBT) scams. There have been multiple instances of victims receiving a scam text stating their EBT card has been locked and they must call a number to unlock it. When the victim calls the designated number, the automated message identifies the victim and asks for their 16-digit card number as well as the four-digit security code. After obtaining the information, they will advise that the card has been unlocked, when in reality, they have just gained access to all of the victims finances. They may then steal the victims Food or Cash Assistance benefits. Madison County residents are advised to report the scammer and call the correct EBT support line, (888) 356-3281.
Madison County Circuit Court Clerk Billy Washington has also warned residents of a jury duty scam. All notices from the office will be sent by US Postal Service only, and any other methods of communication are a scam. Attempts to solicit payments through PayPal or similar services is part of the scam. Anyone with questions concerning this issue may contact Washington's office at (850) 973-1500.
