In an effort to keep impaired drivers off the road and to provide a safer New Year’s holiday, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) has announced they will again be offering a safe and free local ride home to anyone who may be impaired on Tuesday, Dec. 31. The service will be available from 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, until 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1. The number to call is (850) 973-4001. People are asked to please not call 911 for a ride home.
According to the MCSO, “recent data shows December drunk driving deaths are the highest in almost 15 years. As a result, the MCSO is partnering with the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to support “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.” As part of this campaign, which runs through the New Year holiday, it is likely that motorists will see a greater number of law enforcement officials on the roads throughout the holiday season. The MCSO reminds everyone:
• Never drink and drive
• Don’t allow someone to get behind the wheel if that person has been drinking
• If you are hosting a gathering, make sure everyone has a sober ride home
• Call 911 if you see a drunk driver
• Always wear your seat belt; this is your best defense against impaired drivers.
