Jessica Hasty, age 11, of Madison has been playing football since she was five years old on the recreational teams. This year she tried out for the football team at her school, Valwood School in Valdosta, Ga., where she is a sixth grader. She made the team and is currently the only girl player. She is the daughter of Jeffery and Peggy Hasty. Jessica describes the first couple of days with her new teammates as awkward since they were all getting to know each other but after that they all became friends. All of the coaches have welcomed her with open arms and are amazed at her perseverance. After Jessica suffered a broken wrist, she still went out on the field and played her heart out.
Jessica’s favorite part of football is hitting people and making friends. She plays safety on the defensive team and the tightened on the offensive team. Her future goal in football is to be a kicker. On top of playing football, Jessica is also part of the cross county and soccer teams. She plans to continue playing football and perhaps get a football scholarship. After high school, Jessica plans on going to college to become either a teacher or a pediatrician. “We are very proud of her accomplishments on and off the field,” said Peggy Hatsy, Jessica’s mom. “Jessica is the type of person that is always up for a challenge and football poses quite a few challenges for her but she enjoys embracing them.” Peggy also added that her daughter always puts school first and despite all the teams she is on, manages to maintain a straight A average.
