On Tuesday, Sept. 13, Madison native Trey Galbraith, who plays golf on the Lafayette High School varsity golf team, helped the Hornets set a new school record for nine holes of golf. That afternoon at the Perry Golf and Country Club, the Hornets faced off against the Taylor County High School Bulldogs and the Wakulla High School War Eagles.
The Hornets shot a team total of 160 over nine holes of golf. Galbraith shot an incredible 34 over nine holes. Fellow Hornets, Brent Sullivan and Harris Johnson, both shot 41. Riley Edwards closed out the afternoon with a score of 44. Galbraith's 34 was one stroke below the score of his coach, Robbie Kerby, who had shot a 35 in 2001, on the way to setting a Hornets' record that would hold until Galbraith and company would break their record by one stroke.
“It was a great feeling of achievement. I'm in my sixth year of high school golf and, ever since my ninth grade year, we have been aware of the record and what it would take to break it,” said Galbraith. “We went into this year with several individual and team goals, and it just so happens that was one of our team goals. Then, when we found out the last score was low enough to cut 161, we all had a feeling of excitement and relief.”
“I honestly thought the record would be broken last year,” said Coach Kerby. “That team came close against Madison when they shot a 162. These guys, this year, keep improving and, when we started this year, I knew it was going to be a matter of time before they would break the record. Galbraith has been going crazy low, shooting under par regularly. He's got some guys that have really stepped up their games, too. Sullivan has been the most steady player, with his score counting in every single match for three years running. Edwards is finding his consistency this year and all it took was for Johnson to really improve his game and came in clutch, with by far, his career low score of 41.”
Trey is the son of Butch and Channah Galbraith.
