Mickey Starling reporter3@greenepublishing.com In 1994, Madison native Geoffrey Buchanan followed in the footsteps of his father, retired Captain Dan Buchanan, and his uncle, the late Bobby Joe Buchanan, enlisting to serve in the United States Army National Guard. Buchanan's exemplary career took another leap forward on Friday, Dec. 16, when he was promoted to the rank of Colonel during a ceremony at National Guard Bureau Headquarters, in Arlington, Va. The ceremony was hosted by U.S. Forces Command Deputy Commanding General, Major General Troy Galloway. Buchanan's family, several Armybuddies and some college friends were all in attendance for his prestigious promotion. Col. Buchanan currently presides as the Chief of Training for the Army National Guard, where he is responsible for the training, programming and policy development for the institutional/collective training, training management and training support to increase readiness across the 54 states and territories that have an Army National Guard unit, as well as the District of Columbia. Buchanan is a 1993 graduate of Madison County High School. Afterwards, he attended North Florida Community College, where his uncle was an instructor. Buchanan credits his uncle with creating an interest in pursuing a criminology degree. While attending Florida State University, Buchanan was a member of the college's ROTC program. During his military career, Buchanan had one tour of duty in Iraq before attending Naval War College.
