On Thursday, Jan. 12, the Madison Garden Club and the Madison Woman’s Club joined together to remember club members who passed away in 2022.
The Garden Club lost two members last year: Sarah Adams honored Louise Smith, who passed away in May and Jackie Brown shared memories of Gail Spurlock, who passed away in August.
The Woman’s Club honored Dale Sowell, who passed away in March. Her daughter Lynn Sowell and granddaughter, Jessica Dedge, shared special memories, and long-time friend Joanne Von Stetina spoke about her friendship with Dale before reading a memorial to Dale written by Ethel Barefoot. The January meeting was a special time for all in attendance.
The February Woman’s Club Meeting took place on Thursday, Feb. 9, with an appropriate Valentine’s theme centered around heart health.
As always, the meeting opened with those in attendance reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, the singing of “God Bless America”, and the reciting of the Woman’s Club Creed. Following that, Chaplain Florida Smith brought a wonderful devotion about the value of love, followed by the blessing.
A wonderful meal of chicken salad, a croissant, grapes, and a cupcake was served by the staff of Divine Events catering services.
As the meal was ending, Jackie Johnson introduced the guest speaker, Logan Langley, PA-C, a Hospitalist at Madison County Memorial Hospital. Langley spoke about the importance of heart health. She gave statistics comparing the risks and indicators for heart attacks between men and women; according to those statistics, heart attacks are the number one killer of women.
During her presentation, Langley distributed information describing the symptoms of both stroke and heart attack and actions one should take if any of these symptoms occur.
Following this insightful presentation, the business portion of the meeting took place. The minutes from January and the treasurer’s report were both reviewed and accepted as presented.
Tickets for the spring fundraiser were distributed to the members in attendance.
You could be one of five winners of a $100 Winn-Dixie gift card, or a $150 Shell gift card. Tickets are $10 apiece.
The drawing will take place at 3 p.m. at the courthouse on Saturday, April 22, during Down Home Days. (You will not have to be present to win.)
If you would like to purchase a ticket, you may contact Nancy Taylor at nancymt67@live.com, Debbie Tuckey at Tuckeydt@comcast.net, or any member of the Madison Woman’s Club.
After the fundraiser was explained, drawings took place for door prizes, and the meeting was adjourned.
