Napkins in your lap, elbows off the table, sit upright, say "please,“ ”excuse me,“ and ”thank you." The Mr. Esquire Gentlemen of the Nu Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. spent the evening in Tallahassee, on Wednesday, May 10.
Ian Rogers, Jordan Bowles, Jaylen Peacock, Kemari Scurry, and Sean Williams began the evening with a trip to Nics Toggery Men's Store, accompanied by Chapter President, Peggy Williams; Makisha Cheeks, Mr. Esquire Chairman; Annie Barfield, Co-Chairman; and Regina Glee Nash, Chapter Vice-President. There, the gentlemen received a lesson on tying a tie, proper shoe maintenance, carrying themselves with confidence, casual vs. professional wear, and proper accessories for men. Fifth grader, Jaylen Peacock was overjoyed to have his shoes shined by a professional.
Following this experience, the group traveled to Marie Livingston's Restaurant, where they practiced dining etiquette. "Do we have to stand every time a lady is excused," stated fourth grader, Sean Williams. "It is a custom that many men still practice today. We want our young men to be given a fair chance in society and not judged negatively; therefore, we will provide them with every opportunity we can to ensure they have an auspicious future," explained Cheeks.
With the support of parents and chapter members, this first lesson was a feat.
