Those tempting purple bags, decorated with snowflake designs, looked like just the thing to give to the chocolate lover on your Christmas list – an assortment of bite-sized Dove, Twix, Snickers and Milky Way chocolates. Just make sure that chocolate-loving friend isn’t allergic to peanuts, wheat or egg products. The assortment of chocolates didn’t list any of those ingredients on the outer bag, and those people who are allergic to peanuts, wheat or egg products could face serious illness or even death, depending on the severity of their allergies, if they happened to unwittingly bite into a candy containing any of those ingredients. Mars Chocolate North America announced a voluntary recall of Dove Chocolate Assortment Snowflakes on Dec. 20 for that very reason. The seasonal item was sold at Wal-mart stores starting Sept. 19 through Dec. 1 to the following states: AZ, GA, MA, MS, OH, VA, CA, IA, MD, NH, OK, VT, CO, IL, ME, NJ, OR, WA, CT, IN, MI, NM, PA, WI, DE, KS, MN, NV, RI, WY, FL, KY, MO, NY and TX. Approximately 6,700 cases of the item may contain Snickers, Milky Way and Twix pieces that contain peanut, wheat and/or eggs, but these ingredients were not listed on the outer package ingredient label, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The identifying numbers on the packages are as follows: Item# 10139802 - UPC# 400050521. LOT numbers include: 537CG4PA30, 537DG4PA30, 538AG4PA30, 538AM4PA30, 541AG4PA20 and 542EM4PA20. Bags of the chocolates have been removed from store shelves. Customers who bought one of the bags before the recall can return it to the point of purchase for a refund.
