Massages can relax andreduce stress, but massages also have other health benefits as
well. There are different kinds of massages, consisting of Swedish massage, deep massage, sports massage and trigger point massage. These massages are used for many different reasons. The Swedish massages are used for relaxation and more energy. The massage therapist uses long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibrations and tapping.
The deep massages are used for muscle damage from injuries. The massage therapist uses slower and forceful strokes. Sports massages are used for people involved in
sports. This massage prevents injuries or is used to treat them.
The massage therapist uses the same technique as the Swedish massage. The trigger point
massages are used to release tight muscle fibers that can form in the muscles after injury or overuse. The massage therapist mainly focuses on the injured or overused area by massaging the
affected area.
Massages can reduce stress, pain, muscle soreness, tension, increase relaxation, improve circulation, energy, alertness, and immune function. Massages are also known to lower ones heart rate and blood pressure.
According to the Mayo Clinic website, massages can also help with anxiety, fibromyalgia, headaches, insomnia related to stress, nerve pain, upper back, neck pain and many other
conditions or injuries.
When I asked the DayLight Salon massage therapists if they had a favorite group to massage, they each had different answers.
Judy stated that she did not have a favorite, but gave me the age group she thought needed massages more, “When you get in your twenties and forties there's more wear and tear on bodies. From a lot of different factors.” However, Eleice had a favorite group to do a massage on. “I like massaging the elderly. They are more humbled and appreciative. Also, they are the ones that can afford it.”
Anyone can get a massage. However, the Mayo Clinic website warns people with these conditions to avoid getting massages. Severe osteoporosis, deep vein thrombosis, a low platelet count, burns, healing wounds, bleeding disorders, broken bones, or if you take blood-thinning medications.
Conditions that need discussion with your doctor are, if you have cancer or are pregnant.
When asked who should get a massage, Eleice jokingly stated, “A massage therapist.”
Eleice then went on to say, “Massage therapists are the best at putting themselves on the back
burner.”
Massages should never be uncomfortabl or painful. If something feels wrong, speak up and let
the massage therapist know. If the massage therapist uses lotion or oil, tell them beforehand of any allergies you have to the ingredients. Do not be afraid to ask if they are licensed and about their
massaging experience.
