Friday, May 24 was an exciting day at Madison County Central School. The school hosted a ceremony celebrating the scholastic achievements of its pre-kindergarten through second grade students and displayed their first kindergarten through fifth grade art show under art teacher, Michelle Jessup. During this ceremony, students were recognized and received awards such as: Citizenship Award, Future Leader, Most Improved Student, Accelerated Reader, Perfect Attendance Award, and Exemplary Performance in varying levels of annual course work. Parents and teachers looked on excitedly as the children climbed the steps of the festive stage to receive their trophies or medals from pre-kindergarten through second grade principal, Amy Kendrick. At the end of the program, MCCS principal, Dr. Willie Miles presented bicycles to three students: Tobias Ivory, Victoria Hernandez, and Lyzah Bochnia. These bicycles were generously donated to the school by the Madison County Youth Football/Amos Turner League, represented at the ceremony by A.D. Kinsey and Merv Mattair.
As the ceremony ended, students and parents made their way to the gymnasium lobby to browse the student art on display. There, Jessup beamed with pride at her pupils' work. “They worked really hard,” said Jessup. “[Many] are really, amazingly talented.” From sculpture, to water color, to crayon, and photography, Jessup is exposing her students to a wide range of mediums. Based on the level of creativity and thoughtfulness behind many of the pieces, it is hard to believe that several of the young artists were only five years old. Jessup is clearly bringing excitement to the creative process of her students, and they love her for it.
