Christy Bass Adams is representing the Madison County Central School (MCCS) Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Over the last two months, Adams has met with almost every teacher at MCCS and asked them what their needs were for their classrooms.
Adams was in education for 18 years. Beginning at MCCS as an elementary teacher, she slowly moved up to the collegiate level. She also has a seventh grader at MCCS and wants him and all other students to receive the best education possible. “My heart is with these teachers, and so many need a boost of encouragement,” said Adams.
Adams asked what specific needs the MCCS teachers had for their students. The top two requests from the teachers were mentors and resources for rewards. One third of the teachers requested someone with which their students could eat lunch once or twice a week as a positive mentoring experience. Resources and funding for incentives was also a top request from over 50 percent of the teachers. These teachers wish to encourage positive behavior and celebrate students for excelling, but often pull from their own pockets. With the economy as it is, that’s becoming harder. Some other mentioned needs were for small group leaders once a week, and occasional classroom readers.
If you are able to donate money or a gift card, Adams guarantees your gifts will be given to teachers and used for the students. Adams will be glad to share what is purchased for their classrooms, as well.
