On Tuesday, May 9, the Madison County High School varsity and junior varsity basketball teams held their basketball banquet at the Madison Church of God Family Life Center. It was an opportunity to take a look back at this year's season and recognize the student athletes for their contributions to the Cowboy basketball program.
Several students were recognized during the evening. Among them were: O'Shea Akins for Most Improved Varsity Player, Marcus Hawkins and Jamie Hampton for Varsity Co-Defensive Players of the Year, LaBron Lee was the Offensive Player of the Year and Orient Livingston was named the Varsity Player of the Year. Micah Newman and Hawkins were named the Scholar Athletes of the Year. The Coach's Award went to Hawkins.
The MCHS Class of 2001 awarded Kemorrin Akins with the Shonda Gallon Scholarship. This was the first year the group of MCHS Alumni has awarded a scholarship to a male athlete. From this year on, the group plans to award a male and a female athlete with the $1,000 scholarship. Local business leader J.P. Moore vowed to donate an extra $500 to each scholarship recipient.
Moore was the guest speaker for the evening. He gave an inspirational presentation in which he spoke on the value of hard work and the importance of putting God first in everything they do.
