The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) has announced the winners of the Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Award. Schools in each classification are recognized for boys sports, girls sports and overall sports. According to the FHSAA, “points are awarded to a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 16 places are scored. In all sports with team scores, points are awarded as follows: 20 for the state champion, 12 for the state runner-up, nine for the state semifinalists, six for 5-8th places, and three for 9-16th places. In sports where 16 or fewer schools qualify for the state tournament bracket, points will only be awarded to the first through 8th place finishers using the same scoring system.”
Schools can have points deducted from their scores for major rules violations such unsportsmanlike conduct, the imposition of fines, etc.
The MCHS Cowboys athletic program placed at the top of Class 1A throughout the state. The Cowboys had a total of 39 points. Overall, MCHS placed second in the state when the boys' and girls' point totals were combined. The overall score for MCHS was 54, just one point shy of the Class 1A overall leader, Baker High School's 55 overall points.
“Madison County High School is proud of all of our student-athletes, and we are honored to place second in the All-Sports award,” said MCHS Athletic Director Price Harris. “This is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our coaches and the student-athletes. To place so high is a testament to the leadership of the District, the school, and the athletic department. It is always a great day to be a Cowboy, but the pride is shining a little brighter today.”
