On Tuesday, Mar. 7, the Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowgirls softball team went on the road to Live Oak to face the Lady Bulldogs of Suwannee County High School. The Cowgirls had to make the trip home with a loss, coming up on the short end of an 8-0 final score. The Cowgirls fell behind early, giving up three runs in the first inning and were unable to make a dent in the Lady Bulldogs' lead. The Cowgirls did manage to get runners on base with five hits and two batters walked, but all seven were left stranded on base.
Abi Annett had two base hits in three at-bats for the Cowgirls. Laila Dickey, Reese Rutherford, and Hope Underhill also had hits for the Cowgirls. Annett was the losing pitcher, giving up one hit and two earned runs. Rutherford came to relieve Annett in the bottom of the fifth inning. Rutherford gave up four hits and one earned run. Rutherford also threw three strike-outs in her two innings of pitching for the Cowgirls.
On Thursday, Mar. 9, the Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowgirls softball team traveled to Perry for a game with the Taylor County High School Lady Bulldogs. The Cowgirls came from behind to win a resounding victory in a shortened game. The Cowgirls trailed the Lady Bulldogs 4-2 after three innings. Then the Cowgirls scored four runs in the fourth inning before exploding with a nine run fifth inning. The game was called after five innings with the Cowgirls ahead 15-5.
Dickey went three-for-three at the plate with one RBI. Jocelyn Davis had two hits in three at-bats and drove in two runs. Annett had two hits in five trips to the plate with three RBIs. The winning pitcher was Underhill, who pitched three innings. Underhill gave up four hits, two earned runs, and struck out three batters.
Then, on Friday, Mar. 10, the Cowgirls hosted the Lady Warriors from Aucilla Christian Academy. This time, it was the Cowgirls who were on the short end of a shortened game, losing to the Lady Warriors 10-0 in six innings.
The Cowgirls struggled at the plate, only managing one hit, a single in the bottom of the fifth inning by Katelyn McCamman. The losing pitcher for the Cowgirls was Rutherford who gave up seven hits and three earned runs in her four innings pitched. Rutherford also struck out five batters. Underhill came in to relieve Rutherford in the fifth inning, giving up four hits and three earned runs in her two innings of pitching. Underhill registered three strike-outs.
The Cowgirls, now 7-4, are on spring break this week and will return to action with an away game against Lafayette High School on Thursday, Mar. 23, before returning home on Friday, Mar. 24 for a game with Suwannee County High School. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
