It started several years ago, when Sonical Murphy-Mitchell decided to do something special for the graduating seniors on her son's baseball team at Madison County High School (MCHS). She knew that many students will be leaving home for the first time and may not think about some of the “essentials” that would be needed. She decided to put together a laundry basket filled with things like detergent, dish soap, paper towels, etc.
Since that first year, Murphy-Mitchell's program has grown far beyond just the seniors on the baseball team. With the help of her employer, the Lake City Correctional Facility, she has expanded to include more students and more schools. Soon, she will include even more schools. When she began this project, she put the baskets together out of her own pocket. Now she takes donations from others who help with this endeavor. This year, 20 MCHS seniors (10 males and 10 females) received the baskets, which were presented on Wednesday, May 3.
If anyone would like to help with this, you can reach out to Sonical Murphy-Mitchell via her Facebook page, or call (850) 253-5155.
