Mettie Carlena Walsh Gray O’Hara made the final trip to her glorious resting place in Heaven into the arms of her Lord and Savior. Carlena was born January 20, 1917 in Concord, Fl., where she lived until she enrolled at the Florida State University School for Women. She graduated from FSUSW with a degree in Elementary Education. She served God on a regular basis by being one of the first active members of East Hill Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school and training union for over 50 years. Carlena spent much time reading and studying her Bible. She was always prayerfully prepared for every lesson. She also taught school for 45 years as a first, second and third grade teacher, and has been described as “the epitome of a teacher.” She taught school in Concord, Fl., and in Tallahassee at Caroline Brevard and Woodville. However, most of her years serving as a teacher were at Kate Sullivan Elementary School in Tallahassee. She was loved by her students and their parents. One of her second grade students (Kathleen O’Hara) became her daughter eight years after she was taught by Carlena. Carlena participated in the Kate Sullivan Teachers’ events and the Retired Teachers Association. Carlena and her husband, D.T. O’Hara, loved having friends and neighbors visit their home. She loved to cook and was a master in cake making and decorating for her grandchildren on their birthdays. She was preceded in death by her previous husbands: Wilson Gray and D.T. O’Hara, Jr.; her parents: Jim and Claudia Walsh; sisters: Janice Taunton and Louise Walsh. Carlena is survived by her children: Luther “Bud” O’Hara, Kathleen O’Hara Braswell and son-in-law Paul Braswell, Sr.; her devoted grandchildren: Gina and Ed Sapp, Robin and Geoff Hill, Price and Jordan O’Hara, Seth and Kristen O’Hara, Paul Braswell, Jr. and Michael Gillespie: great-grandchildren: Will, Blake, Clay and Kim Sapp, Cohen and Hayes O’Hara, Josh Hill, Molly Kate, Riley and Carley Ann O’Hara. She is also survived by her beloved nephews: Sonny and Jimmy Taunton and her loving and attentive East Hill Baptist Church Family. The family will have a private graveside service.
