Nathan Lee “Coot” Akins, age 86, died Tuesday, April 19 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 23 at New Hope Primitive Baptist Church in Cherry Lake, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday, April 22 from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. at T. J. Beggs, Jr. & Sons in Madison.
He was born and raised a life-long resident of Madison County.
Early in his life, he farmed and throughout his life he was involved in some type of farming from the crops to livestock and always had a garden. Akins also cut and hauled pulpwood for a time. He retired from Madison County School System as a school bus driver. Akins directed funerals for T. J. Beggs, Jr. and Sons for many years. During his spare time, he loved to go fishing and hunting. Akins liked to cut up and kid around with people, always a jokester.
He was a longtime member of New Hope Primitive Baptist Church in Cherry Lake.
A daughter, Polly Davis, predeceases Akins.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Martha McQuay Akins; a daughter, Obra “Wan” Baynard and her husband Lee, of Madison; six grandchildren: Selina Davis, of Madison; Willie Davis, of Orlando; Donald Davis, of Orlando; Antonio Baynard, of Washington, D.C.; Gregory Baynard, of Houston, Tx. and Leah Baynard, of Hahira, Ga.; eight great grandchildren and many great, great grandchildren.
