Neil Diamond is easily one of the most iconic singer/songwriters in popular music history. For more than half a century, he penned songs made popular by many artists, as well as songs he recorded himself. Beginning with his first hit, “Solitary Man,” in 1966, Diamond wrote and recorded some of the most recognizable songs in popular music. His long list of hits include, “I’m a Believer,” “Song Sung Blue,” “Love on the Rocks” and dozens more, including possibly one of the most famous sing-along songs of all, “Sweet Caroline.”
In 2018, a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis forced Diamond to retire from performing, with the announcement, “It is with great reluctance and disappointment that I announce my retirement … I have been so honored to bring my shows to the public for the past 50 years.”
Although it may not be possible to hear Neil Diamond in concert now, area residents have an opportunity to experience the next best thing. Keith Allyn will be bringing his Neil Diamond tribute show to Van H. Priest Auditorium on Saturday, March 1, at 7 p.m. Bearing an uncanny resemblance to Diamond, Allyn performs many of Diamond’s beloved hits in an entertaining way that will surely delight audiences of all ages. Allyn’s Branson, Mo. show has been a fan favorite for years. More than a mere musical review, Allyn’s show tells the story of Diamond’s life and career with humor, tears and fond memories.
Allyn began his performing career at the young age of 14 as a budding stand-up comedian. He opened for such performers as Chris Rock, Tim Allen and Robin Williams. A few years later, he discovered his musical talents and began performing as “Elvis.” Then, as he was trying to impress a girl who was a big Neil Diamond fan, he called her on the phone and sang Diamond’s “Hello Again,” in his best Neil Diamond impersonation. The girl was impressed enough that she and Allyn married, and he became “The Diamond Image.”
“A Neil Diamond Tribute” is being presented by the American Legion Post 224. Tickets for the concert are $30 and can be purchased by calling (910) 818-9281, (910) 224-9744 or (850) 464-7569.
