From Wednesday, June 9, to Thursday, June 17, another New Testament High School student attended the Capitol, but this time it was for Girls State. Seventeen year-old Kristen McClune, upcoming senior, was chosen to represent our area at Girls State by the Florida American Legion Auxiliary Department. The girls stayed at Florida State University and spent several days at the Capitol in Tallahassee, Fla. There, they performed various mock governmental procedures, such as passing bills and having debates. To be selected for Girls State, the student must have high academic achievements, good personal character and an interest in gaining more knowledge of the government. McClune seemed to fit the bill perfectly.
At Girls State, McClune was appointed as a Page for the state and selected as the Director of Public Works for the City. “It was an amazing experience, and I am super grateful that I had the opportunity to go,” said McClune. “I met a lot of wonderful girls from all over Florida, some who will likely make a huge impact in the political world in the future.” She does not see herself in the political field later on, but still deemed the experience very important. “I believe it is important that I have a good understanding of how things work. It will be my responsibility to make wise decisions when I begin to vote.”
McClune wanted to thank the American Legion Auxiliary Post #224 for allowing her to have the opportunity, and “providing me with this awesome experience,” she said.
Kristen McClune is the daughter of Steven and Sharon McClune.
