To commemorate Black History Month and Women’s History Month, NFCC is seeking nominations from the public for the 2016 Jenyethel Merritt Award for Civic Service. The award will go to a local African-American woman who lives in NFCC’s six-county district – Hamilton, Jefferson, Lafayette, Madison, Suwannee or Taylor County – and has made significant contributions to her community.
Nominations are being accepted now through Friday, March 11. A committee of students, faculty and staff will review nominations and make the selection. The award recipient and nominees will be honored at a reception planned for this summer at NFCC.
The late Jenyethel Merritt was president of Suwannee River Junior College, an African-American junior college established by the Florida legislature in 1958 and located in Madison. SRJC operated from 1959 until 1966 when it merged with NFCC, then North Florida Junior College. Merritt was Florida’s first woman president of a public community college. She was reputed to be a strong leader who promoted positive college-town relations.
