North Florida Community College Freshmen English II students starred in a Poetry on Stage event in December at the NFCC Fine Arts Auditorium. Instructor Rose Knox dedicated the poetry reading as a tribute to her former teacher, the late Ms. Frances Sanders.
“Mrs. Sanders created in me a love of learning - a respect for words, ideas, other people and a reverence for the natural world that went way beyond a textbook or a test question,” said Knox. “Thank you Mrs. Sanders. Though you have been gone for a while now, your creative, poetic spirit still lives on. It lives on in me. And it lives on today upon this very stage.”
Sanders (1929-2013) was a Madison County native and alumna of NFJC and Florida State University who taught elementary education in the Madison County school system for 30 years before retiring in 2000. Among her many contributions and services to our community, Sanders is well known for founding the Kids Culture Club in Madison, a club created to instruct students in “culture” and refinement.
The Poetry on Stage event is held each Fall and Spring Term as an assignment of Knox’s Freshman English II course. Students memorize and recite a poem during the event and guests are also invited to recite poetry through an “open mic” style invitation.
