There was hardly a dry eye in the room when the Madison County Board of County Commissioners voted to recognize and honor the memory of the late Joe Peavy by naming Nov. 8 “Joe C. Peavy Day” in Madison County. During their regular meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 14, the board unanimously voted to permanently recognize the beloved long time sheriff of Madison County, who passed away on Nov. 19 of this year. Nov. 8 was Peavy's birthday.
Peavy served as sheriff of Madison County from 1972 until his retirement in 2000. Before serving as sheriff, Peavy was a trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol for 16 years.
On hand to receive a plaque commemorating the event was Peavy's son, Opie; and Peavy's widow, Suzanne. Suzanne Peavy expressed her gratitude to the commissioners for their kind words. “Joe really did love Madison County,” said Suzanne. Madison County will continue to love and remember Sheriff Joe Peavy as well.
