The headline read, in big box letters, “FLORIDA FREEZE WORST SINCE 1899” in the Dec. 14, 1962 New York Times, p. 1 and 9. The 1962 article stated that the Tallahassee temperature had plunged to 10 degrees. In Jacksonville, the mercury had slipped to 12, and in Apalachicola to 14. Palm Beach’s temps had fallen to 30.

The “Storm King” was also known as the Great Blizzard of 1899. The storm had started in Canada, running from Feb. 11 to Feb.
