Patsy Patterson Hardee was born on April 9, 1948, and was welcomed home to the arms of Jesus on May 20, 2020.
She grew up in multiple places, including Puerto Rico and Titusville, before landing in Madison and graduating with the Class of '66. Patsy married the love of her life, Cary A. Hardee, II, on Sept. 5, 1970. And that was the start of an almost 50 year, adventurous journey that left Patsy as the subject of countless practical jokes - primarily at the hands of Bo and Tommy, though Cary often got the blame! If you listen to the stories long enough, you could get the idea that she grew fond of the "torment'' despite threatening punishment and chasing after the culprit with a shoe or wooden spoon in hand.
Patsy attended North Florida Community College and Tallahassee Community College. After working at the Bank of Madison and acting as a substitute teacher in Madison County, she started a 35+ year career at the Hardee Law Firm. She and Cary worked side by side. And while Cary practiced law, Patsy was the one that really laid down the law.
Patsy had many titles including Mama, Gigi, Aunt Patsy, friend and Patsy Pine Tree, Queen of the Magnolias. But no matter what you called her, you knew that if you called her, she would be there for you. Patsy could be described as altruistic. Her heart for others was evident in everything she did. She opened the door to anyone in need of a place to stay. And she was a mother to many that weren't actually her children. If she knew of anyone in need, she was ready to respond and help. Patsy would help plan the party, work the party and be the last to leave after cleaning up after the party. You could find her in the kitchen, washing the dishes and wiping down the counters, no matter whose house it was or even how well she knew them. She was also the one that would end up behind the counter at any restaurant - Shelby's, Ken's or an out of town spot- preparing drinks or adding more sugar to their sweet tea. She was known to even bus a few tables if needed. Her life was a selfless one that leaves an impact on many that we likely will never even know about.
Patsy is survived by her husband, Cary; sons, Bo (Suzi) and Tommy (Kaila); four grandchildren: Gus, Tuff, Fraleigh and Jacob; her brother, Kim; her step-mother, Bobbi Godwin; and a host of countless friends and others that called her their adopted mama. She was pre-deceased by her son, Patrick Magnum Hardee.
She was small but mighty, and often feisty. But she was a special lady that will be missed dearly. So, as we reflect on her life, have a glass of sweet tea and add some extra sugar to honor her. We will try to get this party right Patsy, but it won't be the same without you in the kitchen until the very end.
We would like to thank the medical professionals of Madison County Memorial Hospital for the outstanding and compassionate care shown to Patsy and our family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Big Bend Hospice or Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. A private service was held on Saturday, May 23, and broadcast on Facebook Live at 11a.m. on Cary A. Hardee's Facebook page.
