On Friday, Dec. 15, the Quaker Oats Company issued a voluntary recall of certain granola bars and cereals due to concerns that the products might be contaminated with salmonella, a bacteria known to cause severe and occasionally fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly and individuals with weakened immune systems. Salmonella infections can manifest with symptoms such as fever, diarrhea (potentially bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
The affected products are distributed across the 50 United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and Saipan. Consumers are urged to check their pantries for the specific granola bars and cereals included in the recall and dispose of them immediately. Quaker emphasizes that this recall exclusively pertains to the mentioned products; no other Quaker items are impacted.
So far, Quaker has not received any confirmed reports of illness linked to the recalled products. Consumers with any of the recalled products are encouraged to contact Quaker Consumer Relations at 1 (800) 492-9322, available from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
