On Tuesday, Aug. 1 at 7 p.m., Lee held a Town Council Meeting.
Rachel Silver, with Southeast Rural Community Assitance Project, Inc. (SERCAP), visited and presented a presentation on the effects pharmaceuticals have on our waterways. When someone flushes pharmaceuticals in our waterways, our redistribution system is not designed to filter out any contaminants. Silver also talked about the effects pharmaceuticals have on the creatures in our waterways. When exposed to harsh substances, aquatic animals have altered growth, reproduction and behavior.
Silver also talked about the importance of making sure you dispose of your pharmaceuticals properly. Instead of flushing them down, crush the pills up, cover them in dirt or mud to make them look unappealing and throw them away. Silver showed a website to the council which is called https://river-runner-global.samlearner.com/. On this website, you can input any place in the world and see the track a raindrop takes through different waterways. This shows the impact clean water locally has on different places around the globe. Silver also left packets, available at Lee Town Hall, for those who have pharmaceuticals to dispose of. The packets can be filled up to 8oz. and dropped at the local post office. Postage for packets is free.
There was more discussion about editing the ordinance to have a set decibel of sound. Also in discussion was the possibility of purchasing Madison police decibel meters. The council members also discussed setting a cut-off time for the Town of Lee. There was no fire department report.
The Lee Council Meetings are held at Lee City Hall in Kinsey Hall at 286 NE CR 255, Lee, Fla.
