The Relay For Life of Madison event was held on Friday, April 29 at Boothill Stadium from 6 p.m. to midnight, giving everyone in the Madison County community the chance to celebrate those who have battled cancer and honor the loved ones who have been lost due to the disease.
During this year's event, a total of 17 teams and 73 participants took part in Relay For Life, raising a total of $17,167.05. The theme for this year was “I do not like cancer here or there, I do not like cancer anywhere!” Each team chose a Dr. Seuss book to read from throughout the night and featured special booths with games, food and drinks.
The opening ceremony was held at 6 p.m., followed by the survivor's victory lap at 6:10 p.m. and the caregivers lap at 6:20 p.m. There were several performances, including Zumba by Get Fit of Madison, the Madison Academy Jazz Ensemble, the Madison Academy Pop Group, the girls at Becky's Dance Steps Studio and the Madison Boys Choir. In addition, musical soloist Rachel Sullivan also performed.
At 9 p.m., the luminaria ceremony was held and candles were lit to remember loved ones lost to cancer, support those who have cancer and honor those who have fought cancer; the mission movement and sports hour followed.
The night concluded with the closing ceremony at midnight. All in all, the Relay For Life of Madison event was a great success, judging by the number of participants and the amount of money raised that will go towards finding a cure.
Until next year!
