On Wednesday March 8, the Madison Rotary Club enjoyed a busy meeting, beginning with the installation of their newest member, Mickey Starling, with Greene Publishing, Inc. Starling was sponsored by Rotary President Mark Branham, who began the meeting by reading the requirements of membership. Starling then gave a brief background of his employment and interests before being welcomed into the club.
Next, Rotarian Joe Boyles, who served in the United States Air Force for over 27 years, gave a fascinating presentation about four heroic veterans from Madison County: Dale Leslie, who survived in the jungles of Guadalcanal after being shot down by Japanese forces: Homer Wallace, who helped liberate numerous concentration camps in Germany: Lee Cason, who flew over 40 combat missions, helping to destroy key Japanese fueling stations during World War II; and James Carroll Agner, who spent over 300 days in continuous battle during World War II. He served valiantly during both the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge, and received numerous medals for his faithful service.
The Rotarians ended their weekly meeting by reminding the members of upcoming ramp-building projects with Timmy Dyke. Rotarians regularly devote their time to helping provide ramps for residents throughout our area.
The Madison Rotary Club meets each Wednesday, at 12 p.m., at the Villa Maria Social Hall of the St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church, located on Orange Ave., across from Beggs Funeral Home in Madison. Taking the Rotary motto, “service above self” to heart, the local Rotarians have supported many local service projects, ranging from providing books to local elementary schools to area disaster relief, and more.
