The Madison County School Board came together for their bi-monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 16 at 6 p.m. The meeting was started off with an introduction of the school district's new Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Ida Walker. Next, two citizens spoke to the school board. A citizen spoke to the members about a camp that she is hosting at Madison County Central School, Music Meets Math and Science, that will run from June 22 to July 16 on Monday-Thursday. The camp is designed to give the students a zest for math and science, while singing, dancing and playing instruments. Interested students can call the Madison County School Board or Central School for enrollment information. Wes Miller, a film director, spoke to the school board about the possibility of using the Madison County Central School as a filming location. The film, Prayer Never Fails, is about a basketball coach that is fired after praying with his players and files a wrongful termination case. Miller will bring a contract to the board next month and plans to film July 9-12.
The school board members unanimously approved a trip for 12 MCHS basketball players and two coaches to attend University of Florida basketball camp. The board members approved to advertise the Student Code of Conduct and the TRIM meeting dates and times. The board unanimously approved extra hours for the schools, while adding up to 80 hours for Greenville Elementary School since they did not apply for any and decreasing the hours down to 20 for the Incentives Program. The board members approved the rental of office space at the Twin Oaks Vocational Academy for $500 a month ($6,000 a year). The office will be used for administration purposes as the Madison County School District is taking over the Academy’s educational program. The board unanimously approved Voyager Sopris, a four-day training program for 40 teachers. The total cost will be $40,457.08. The training will be paid for with a grant. The training will be at the end of July. At the end of the meeting, Superintendent Doug Brown updated the school board on the Madison County High School construction project. The required demolition is 85 percent completed and they are currently picking out furniture, fixtures, equipment and paint colors for the school.
