In a surprise announcement on Tuesday, May 18, the City of Madison will soon witness and welcome some much-needed growth. Mary Graham, the city’s community developer and planning and zoning department official, requested a meeting with the city manager and other city staff. She had planned the meeting earlier in the previous week with some investors and business owners that had a serious interest in upgrading some properties and new developments in the City of Madison, but had not disclosed what the upgrades would be, nor the location.
“To be fully prepared to support any business that was choosing to locate in Madison, as city manager, I assembled all of the department heads and the county’s building inspector to be ready to answer questions and provide crucial input that would be necessary for decisions that would have to be made,” said City Manager Jerome Wyche.
The investors and engineers of Urban Catalyst Consultants (UCC), Inc., officially announced to the city that plans were in effect to bring a Popeyes Chicken and a Taco Bell franchise to Madison. The UCC engineer presented plans that would have both the old Kentucky Fried Chicken building and the old Sonic building on Highway 90 West demolished and designs for two new, separate buildings to be constructed.
The City is moving forward with its due diligence to include permitting, utility upgrades as needed, building codes and other requirements from the Land Development Regulations. The City is encouraged by this growth as it puts other growth possibilities in motion and invites other businesses to relocate in Madison. The owners and engineers are expected to begin tentative construction within the next four to six months.
