Derrick Sneed, 39, of Monticello has been appointed to The Arc of Florida Board of Directors. Derrick is the son of Olivia Sneed and the late David Sneed, Sr. Everyday Derrick comes from Monticello to The Arc Big Bend in Madison. The Arc Big Bend is a community based nonprofit 501 C-3 organization primarily serving persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They provide services and staff across the Big Bend region: Madison, Jefferson, Leon, Gadsden, Wakulla, Taylor, Suwannee, Hamilton and Lafayette counties. Now that he has been appointed to The Arc of Florida Board of Directors he will be able to have input into all matters concerning The Arc. “I am very excited and fortunate,” said Sneed when asked how he feels about being appointed. Derrick is not sure how long his term on the Board of Directors will be. He will attend The Arc Conventions in Tampa in October to find out. He will be able to travel and attend four board meetings a year. In 2013, Derrick participated in The Arc of Florida’s “End the R-word in Florida.” He spoke to the Florida Legislature about how the r-word needed to be ended. He told them that the r-word was not nice and he did not like hearing it. He said people needed to respect people. Senate Bill 142 was passed unanimously and the r-word was stricken from all Florida Statutes. He was very happy that they listened.
