The United Methodist Cooperative Ministries Thrift Shop is a mission outreach close to the hearts of many. Volunteers from Methodist churches throughout Madison County, as well as community volunteers, come together to run the shop, collecting clothes, shoes, household items, books and even electronics. The items are sold at low prices so that community members' needs are met. All proceeds go towards the UMC's mission work, including a food bank, disaster relief, home fires, emergency needs of foster children, recently released inmates, nursing homes, assisted living homes and other needs as they arise. All leftover clothing and shoes are packed up and shipped off to third world countries-- there is never a wasted garment. UMCM also loans medical equipment such as wheel chairs, crutches and walkers to people who have been injured and cannot afford to purchase proper items. Sue Hunter, thrift shop manager, asserts that the store is completely operated by volunteers and stays open thanks to generous donations from the public. “Donations enable us to serve God's people in so many ways,” says Hunter. It is certain that the UMCM's thrift shop is a great asset to the people of Madison County. The volunteers who give their time selflessly, without a doubt, will be on Jesus' mind when he says: Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me... Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me. Matthew 25:34-39.
