On Friday, Nov. 4, the Toastmasters gathered for their meeting around the theme, “Time Changes Everything.” The word of the day was “irony,” meaning to express one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite meaning, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. Kaitlynn Culpepper provided an informative educational moment for delivering effective speeches. She highlighted the need to be confident, sincere and brief.
The day's speeches were led off by Jim Catron's discussion of sermon preparation. Catron emphasized the need for prayer and dependence on God's grace for preparing good messages. Mickey Starling followed Catron, giving a speech about the boundless grace of God and His ability to radically change our lives.
The Table Topics segment produced some great impromptu speeches, with John Booth recalling how he often was assigned dish duty from his teens and throughout adulthood. Booth noted that, over time, he has preferred the chore he once would rather have avoided. Gordie Allen took a delightful trip down memory lane, recalling several youthful escapades that included a spontaneous road trip on historic Route 66 and a jump from an airplane that involved a harrowing landing.
Look for updates on special events that the Toastmasters have planned for the near future. This organization is dedicated to improving the speaking and leadership qualities of their members in a manner that is encouraging and entertaining. The next meeting of the Toastmasters will be held on Friday, Dec. 9, in the board room of Tri-County Electric Cooperative, located at 2862 E US 90, in Madison. The meeting begins at 12 p.m.
