In recognition of the annual "Read Across America" event, Tri-County Electric Co-op (TCEC) and the Madison Kiwanis Club teamed up to read to elementary school students across Madison County. Several volunteers from both organizations gave their time to read to students at Greenville Elementary School, Pinetta Elementary School, Lee Elementary School, Madison County Central School and Madison Creative Arts Academy on Monday, March 2. That date has been chosen for the annual event because it coincides with the birthday of Dr. Seuss, the well-known author of many children's books.
According to Madison Kiwanis Club President Kim Scarboro, volunteers read to approximately 500 youngsters during the event. After reading to the students, books were donated to the classes. "We appreciate all the Kiwanis members and community and business volunteers who joined us this year to celebrate and encourage reading in our community," said Scarboro. "A special thanks to Linda Hesketh for coordinating the project and finding a variety of fun Dr. Seuss books to share with the children and schools this year."
"We always enjoy this event and we are thankful to Kiwanis for coordinating the project and letting us participate," said Kaitlynn Culpepper, with TCEC. "TCEC has an employee volunteer program that encourages and empowers employees to be more involved and give back to the communities we serve. Reading to students at local schools is just one of the ways we are able to do just that."
