Since 1954, America’s military veterans have been shown special honor and appreciation every Nov. 11. The holiday began under a different title, “Armistice Day,” which began in 1926. It was primarily celebrated to mark the end of World War I, which occurred in 1918. When war broke out in Europe a few years later, resulting in the death of thousands of American soldiers, the name was changed to Veterans Day, to honor all veterans.
Madison County veterans have a special treat awaiting them this year, thanks to the efforts of Madison County Veterans’ Affairs Office Director Alvin Swilley and numerous area restaurants. To receive discounts and free meals, proof of military service is required. Here are the restaurants offering discounts and free breakfasts for Veterans Day, which is Saturday, Nov. 11: Grumpy’s Diner is offering a 25 percent discount all day; Burger King is offering a free sausage biscuit and coffee during breakfast hours (8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.); both McDonald’s locations are also offering free sausage biscuits and coffee from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; Corner Cafe, in Lee, is offering free biscuits and gravy from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.; C and E Market Place is offering a free trip to the breakfast buffet on Friday, Nov. 10, from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.; and Juanita’s Corner Kitchen is offering free take-out breakfasts on Friday, Nov. 19, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., for the first 20 customers.
