Virginia Elizabeth “Betty” Naughton passed away in the loving arms of Jesus, her loving family, and friends, on Sunday, April 16, 2017, at Big Bend Hospice, in Tallahassee. Betty was born on August 10, 1951, in Madison. After graduation from Madison High School, she attended North Florida Junior College, and later graduated from Florida State University, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Betty taught school in Madison County and at Madison Academy. She also worked in Public Relations at North Florida Junior College, and was a paralegal in Jacksonville and Tallahassee.
Betty was a loving mother to her daughter Elisabeth, whom she adored. Elisabeth was her mother’s greatest joy. Betty loved spending time with family and friends, preparing gourmet meals, working in her garden, and she had an amazing talent in home decorating. Betty was an active member of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, in Madison, and Co-Cathedral of the St. Thomas More, in Tallahassee.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Alba and Ferd Naughton, II, and brother, Ferd Naughton, III. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Elisabeth Wilson; three sisters, Barbara Beggs (Billy), Mary Carol Kaney, Louise Waldron (Allan); sister-in-law, Martha Naughton; cousins, nieces and nephews, and a special grand-niece, Keeley McKeogh.
The family is most grateful to the doctors and nurses who have cared for Betty, especially those at Big Bend Hospice. A very special thank you goes to Betty’s many dear friends who formed a strong support group for her throughout her illness. A special thank you goes to Laura Scott-Dorsch, who pushed all boundaries to ensure that Betty had the highest quality of life possible. Each of you helped Betty live longer, because of your never-ending love, kindness and support.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, April 18, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Beggs Funeral Home, located at 3322 Apalachee Parkway in Tallahassee. The Funeral Mass was celebrated at the Co-Cathedral of the St. Thomas More on Wednesday, April 19, at 10 a.m., and the burial was at Oakridge Cemetery, in Madison.
